Campaigners Respond to Call for Third Level Campus Smoking Ban

482271120

Responding to yesterday’s call (from ASH Ireland) for a third level education campus smoking ban, Forest Ireland has slammed the suggestion saying that it is “both unenforceable and unnecessary in the context of adults who are engaged in enhancing their education”.

John Mallon, spokesman for the smokers’ group Forest Ireland, said:
“There is no evidence that smoking outside is a threat to anyone but the smoker.”

“As such, no outdoor ban can be proposed on evidence-based public health grounds because there aren’t any.

“Introducing smoking bans on third level campuses would be a gross over-reaction. For many, going to college or university is a rite of passage into adulthood which does not benefit from treating participants like children.”
